Update: Sunshine is the 2006 AGS National Champion Senior Doe!

It's a mixed blessing when a doe of this age is awarded the honor of being National Champion. On the one hand, we are incredibly proud of this old gal, who still has the feet and legs of a kid and a lovely udder that remains high and widely attached. On the other hand, we know she can't live forever and treasure every day that she is with us, and every kid that she gives us!

Sunshine was one of the first kids born on our place, out of a wonderful dam that we bought bred from Kathleen Claps. Her name reflects the joy I felt when Kathleen allowed me to buy the single doe kid who was supposed to have been a doe kid back.

A  slow doe to mature, Sunshine really hit her stride as an aged doe. She excels in general appearance and dairy character, being very smoothly blended and free of excess fleshing, with a naturally level topline and rump.  Her udder is beautiful: high and smoothly-attached, with one of the best foreudders in our herd and easily-milkable teats. As a first freshening yearling one judge called her "exquisite" and as a 9 year old another judge referred to her as "...a poster child for longevity in the breed".  She finished her championship 1 week shy of her 6th birthday at the 2002 Fort Worth Stock Show by going grand under both judges. Now at 11 years old she still has incredible feet, is in beautiful condition and her udder is still well shaped and well supported.  We brought her out of retirement when ADGA opened their herdbook for ND's, and in 5 ADGA shows she was GCH 4 times and Best Doe in Show once. Not bad for an old gal!

Unfortunately her best daughter, 2 x Champion Twin Creeks Suncatcher, passed away while carrying triplets, so we will be retaining at least one doe kid out of each future litter from Sunshine. Although she appears to be ageless we know she can't live forever!

We currently have 3 young daughters in our herd:  Sunshine Too and Starshine, both sired by Rosasharn's TL Polaris, and Claire de Lune sired by Dill's OH Catamaran.  We also have Claire's littermate brother Meteor Shower, who will be taking up active duty as a herd sire soon!
